Zimmer Durom® Hip Cup Implant Linked to Severe Hip Replacement Complications
You may be entitled to compensation!

Did you have hip replacement surgery between 2006 and 2008?

If so, you may want to check your doctor’s medical records.

The Durom® Cup was in use during that time.

The Zimmer Durom Hip Cup was removed from the marketplace on July 24, 2008, following reports in a number of patients of its Acetabular Component coming loose, failing to correctly bond, and/or shifting. Prior to the product being taken off the market, more than 12,000 Zimmer Durom Hip Cups had been fitted in patients.

Imbedded in the hip socket in hip replacement surgery, The Durom® Cup is meant to be used with the Metasul® LDH™ large diameter head, which forms the ‘ball’ of the ball and socket that replaces the hip joint.

“Zimmer has received some reports of persistent post-operative pain, dislocation, and loosening of the acetabular implant leading to revision surgery.” Letter from Zimmer to Sandra Williams, FDA Compliance Officer on July 31, 2008

What are Hip Replacements?

Hip replacements – which can also be referred to as hip arthroplasty - are surgical procedures in which the joint of the patient’s hip is replaced by a prosthetic implant.

Such joint replacement orthopaedic surgery is usually undertaken to offer relief from arthritic pain, or to fix severe, physical damage to the joint as part of hip-fracture treatment.
In the long term, a number of problems may surface.

An inflammatory process that causes bone resorption, as well as subsequent loosening or fracture, can occur, and which may result in the need for further surgery.

Hard, ceramic-bearing surfaces are currently being utilized, in the hope that the patient may experience less wear, reduced osteolysis, and more satisfactory long-term results.

Signs the Durom® Cup Implant may be Failing

The following symptoms have appeared after Durom® Cup implantation from 3 to 22 months after the operation, and could potentially show up much later:

  • Little surgical pain relief
  • Leg does not feel stable
  • Something is loose in the hip
  • Stiffness and pain when rising from a chair
  • A sharp pain in the groin when rising
  • Less pain when resting
  • Difficulty climbing stairs – limping, little endurance

There is another frustrating effect noted by the doctors reporting the Durom® Cup failure: the x-rays can look as if nothing is wrong.

Potential Outcomes of Durom® Cup Implantation

In the FDA report, these doctors reported the following potential outcomes of implantation with the Durom® Cup:

  • The cup loosening in the body
  • Lack of ingrowth
  • Need for revision surgery
  • Infection
  • Cup being too small
  • Pain
  • Osteolysis (loose particles make the bone grow away from the implant)
  • Lesions

About the Durom® Cup

Manufactured by Zimmer Holdings, the nation’s largest manufacturer of orthopedic medical devices, the Durom® Cup (officially known as the Durom® Acetabulum Component) was approved for use in the U.S. in 2006. It had been in use in international markets since 2001, with excellent clinical results. Before the product was taken off the market, it is estimated that more than 12,000 Durom® Hip Cups had been implanted into patients.

Described in the Zimmer literature as an “anatomic, forged high-carbon CoCr mono block acetabular shell”, the Durom® Acetabular Cup is intended for patients with noninflammatory degenerative joint disease like avascular necrosis (bone death caused by poor blood supply) and arthritis, and inflammatory joint disease like rheumatoid arthritis.

It is also prescribed for conditions needing a longer-lasting fix, such as replacements for previously failed replacement surgery.
