WHAT ARE MOTORCYCLES?

A motorcycle (which may also be termed as a motor-bicycle, a motorbike, a bike, or a cycle) is a single-track, two-wheeled motor vehicle which is engine-powered.

Motorcycles may vary to a high degree - depending, specifically, upon the precise nature of the job or purpose for which they have been designed, such as long-distance travel, coping with congested traffic in urban areas, cruising, racing and sports, or off-road activites.

In many parts of the world today, motorcycles are among the least expensive and most widespread forms of motorized transport that are currently available on a large scale.

ARE THERE ANY POSSIBLE HEALTH RELATED RISKS POSED BY MOTORCYCLES?

Yes.

In 2006, nearly 5,000 motorcyclists lost their lives in accidents throughout the United States, which amounted to an increase of 5 per cent over the 4,576 who were killed in 2005.

In addition, there were nearly 90,000 motorcycle-related injuries in 2006.

Almost 140,000 motorcyclists have been killed in traffic crashes in the United States since the passing of the Highway Safety and National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act in 1966.

Motorcyclists are around 37 more times likely than passenger car occupants to lose their lives in a motor vehicle crash; and are 8 times more likely to be severely hurt.

In 2006, motorcyclists accounted for more than 10 per cent of all traffic fatalities, 13 per cent of all occupant fatalities, and 4 per cent of all occupants injured.

In 2006, 51 per cent of all motorcycles involved in fatal crashes collided with other type of motor vehicles, including cars, SUVs, trucks, and other motorcycles.

In specifically two-vehicle crashes, 79 per cent of the motorcycles involved were impacted from the front. Only 5 per cent were struck in the rear.

Motorcycles are far more likely to be involved in a fatal collision with a fixed object than are other vehicles.

For example, in 2006, a quarter of the motorcycles involved in fatal crashes were in collision with fixed objects, compared to 18 per cent for passenger cars, 12 per cent for light trucks, and only 3 per cent for large trucks.

Throughout 2006, there were 2,226 two-vehicle fatal crashes involving a motorcycle and another type of vehicle on U.S. roads.

In 40 per cent of these crashes (which amounted to 883 incidents), the other vehicle was attempting to turn left, while the motorcycle was either going straight, passing, or overtaking the vehicle.

Both vehicles were going straight in 582 crashes (26 per cent).
