WHAT ARE SUVs?

A Sport Utility Vehicle (generally referred to as an SUV) is a generic marketing description for a vehicle that is broadly similar to a station-wagon; but one that is built on a light-truck chassis.

Commonly equipped with four-wheel drive capacity – thus allowing for both on-road and off-road access, a number of SUVs possess the towing capacity of a pick-up truck; but with approximately the same passenger-carrying space as that of a mini-van.

SUVs are generally considered as light-trucks. And, as a result, they are often regulated far less stringently than passenger-cars are under two, specific and major laws within the United States: namely, (A) the Energy Policy and Conservation Act for Fuel Economy Standards, and (B) the Clean Air Act for Emissions Standards.

DO SUVs POSE ANY POSSIBLE, SERIOUS RISKS?

Yes.

Statistical analysis of SUV usage and SUV-related accidents reveals a wealth of significant data.

  • Nearly fifty-per-cent of all Americans believe they are safer in an SUV than in a regular car.  (National Consumer Survey, Opinion Research Corporation, January 2005)
  • An almost identical number of Americans do not believe that loading factors contribute to the potential risk of rollovers.  (National Consumer Survey, Opinion Research Corporation, January 2005)
  • Thirty-nine per-cent of all Americans polled admit to feeling more powerful when they are either driving, or are a passenger in, an SUV.  (National Consumer Survey, Opinion Research Corporation, January 2005)
  • SUVs actually roll over far more easily than other types of vehicles. Indeed, approximately 37 per-cent of SUV-based roll-over-based accidents prove to be fatal. The figure for regular passenger- cars, however, currently stands at 15 per-cent. (National Traffic Safety Administration)
  • Throughout 2006, SUVs had the highest occupant fatality rate of any vehicle type in rollover crashes at 7.77 per 100,000 registered vehicles.  This compares with 6.98 for pick-up trucks, 3.10 for vans, and 3.18 for passenger-cars. (Insurance Information Institute)
  • Also in 2006, single-vehicle roll-over crashes accounted for 47 per-cent of all driver deaths in SUVs. This compares with a figure of 39 per-cent of deaths in pick-ups; and 21 per-cent of deaths in cars during the exact same time frame.
  • No less than 8,062 SUV occupants died as a result of accidents in 2006. (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Highway Loss Data Institute)
  •  Forty-three per-cent of passenger-car occupant deaths in 2006 occurred in single-vehicle crashes. However, single-vehicle crashes involving SUVs were significantly higher: at 65 per-cent. (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Highway Loss Data Institute)
