An automobile, or motor-car, may be defined as a wheeled motor-vehicle that is designed for the transportation of passengers.

Most definitions of the term specify that automobiles are specifically designed to run primarily on roadways, to have seating for one-to eight-individuals, to generally have four-wheels, and to be constructed chiefly for the transportation of people rather than goods.

As of 2002, there were 590 million passenger cars worldwide (which equates to approximately one car per eleven people).

The U.S. Department of transportation's Federal Highway Administration states the following:

  • That the evidence shows the risk of having a crash is increased both for vehicles traveling slower than the average speed, and for those traveling above the average speed.
  • That the risk of being injured increases exponentially with speeds much faster than the median speed.
  • That the severity of a crash depends on the vehicle speed change at impact.
  • That there is limited evidence that suggests that lower speed limits result in lower speeds on a system wide basis.
  • That most crashes related to speed involve speed too fast for the conditions.
  • That more research is needed to determine the effectiveness of traffic calming.

In the United States, automobile-related fatalities increased slightly from 40,716 in 1994 to 42,884 in 2003.

However, in terms of fatalities per 100 million miles driven, the fatality rate dropped by 16% between 1995 and 2005.  Injuries dropped 37 per cent over the same period.

Twenty-seven states had reductions in the number of automobile accident fatalities between 2005 and 2006.

Fatalities for those aged 16 and older show that more than 50 per cent of all those killed in automobile accidents in 2006 were unrestrained by seat belts and similar devices.

Figures for fatalities in automobile-related accidents for the period from 1990 to 2007 are as follows:

  • 1990 — 44,599
  • 1991 — 41,508
  • 1992 — 39,250
  • 1993 — 40,150
  • 1994 — 40,716
  • 1995 — 41,817
  • 1996 — 42,065
  • 1997 — 42,013
  • 1998 — 41,501
  • 1999 — 41,717
  • 2000 — 41,945
  • 2001 — 42,196
  • 2002 — 43,005
