WHAT IS THE CALAXO® SCREW?

The Calaxo® screw is a bio-absorbable polymer and calcium carbonate device that is specifically designed to (a) promote the growth of bone; and (b) rapidly increase the body’s ability to assimilate the bone, thus ensuring a speedy recovery time.

ARE THERE ANY POSSIBLE HEALTH RELATED RISKS POSED BY THE CALAXO® SCREW?

Yes.

In March 2006, Smith & Nephew’s Calaxo® screw was approved for use in the United States, and was in use until August 2007.

In August 2007, Smith & Nephew made an immediate recall of the Calaxo® screw following reports of swelling, pain, pockets of fluid build-up, and screw fragmentation in some patients.

According to their own recall letter, in rare cases, a number of patients had reportedly developed pre-tibial soft tissue swelling - between 2 and 36 weeks after the insertion of the Calaxo® screw.

Smith & Nephew advised health care officials and patients that: “because the area of swelling and soft tissue irritation can mimic the appearance of an infection, our medical experts recommend that consideration should be given to aspirating the area for routine cultures.”

In some cases, further surgery - involving debridement, which can be defined as the removal of dead or infected tissue and bone – was required, as was removal of the remaining screw fragments.

In a few cases, surgeons replaced the fragmented polymer screw with an alternate screw or bone graft.

If you had ACL surgery during this time and suspect a Calaxo® screw may have been used, you should contact us.

The ACL extends from the shin-bone, through the knee-joint, and up to the thigh bone. It helps to stabilize the knee and controls front-to-back movement.

During reconstructive surgery, the replacement ligament – which is generally obtained from another part of the body of the patient - is inserted and anchored in tunnels that have been drilled into the shin-bones and thigh-bones using a screw device.

Metal screws were traditionally used for this type of surgery, but remained in place unless further surgery was performed to remove them.

The bio-absorbable Calaxo® screw, however, was specifically developed to replace metal screws.

WHAT ARE THE SPECIFIC HEALTH RELATED RISKS?

The most serious risks include:

  • Swelling around the joint or incision area
  • Redness around the incision
  • Constant pain at the knee joint
  • Accompanying fever to the above symptoms
