WHAT IS GADOLINIUM AND HOW AND WHY IS IT USED? Gadolinium is what is known as a “paramagnetic metal ion.” Gadolinium is used in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Gadolinium helps to present clearer and more delineated imagery of the patient's organs and bodily tissue. Gadolinium is also utilized in Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA), which is designed to seek out heart problems, diseases of the vascular system, and evidence of stroke. Gadolinium has been given approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use with MRI as a contrast-agent to help provide a clearer picture of body organs and tissues. The use of a gadolinium-containing contrast agent to enhance MRA is not currently approved by the FDA, however. ARE THERE ANY POSSIBLE HEALTH RELATED RISKS? Data contained in a May 2006 press-release issued by the Danish Medicines Agency (DMA), as well as information cited in a January 2006 report that was published in the Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation journal, described the experiences of patients affected by renal failure who subsequently went on to develop a rare - but possibly life-threatening - condition known as Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis/Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NSF/NFD). The DMA’s major concern was that all of the patients at issue had undergone a gadolinium-enhanced MRA procedure barely a few weeks, to a few months, prior to developing NSF/NSD. The FDA stated that the first example of NSF/NFD surfaced in 1997, and manifested in patients specifically suffering from advanced kidney-failure. It causes fibrosis of the skin and the connective tissues – which essentially means that the patient's skin becomes thicker - and which has the effect of restricting the patient from being able to bend and/or extend their joints. A severe lack of mobility may be the result. In addition, reports on NSF/NFD state that it has manifested in other, additional areas of the body in certain patients, including in the diaphragm, and in the vessels of the lungs. This is a progressive condition, and it can prove to be fatal. While improving renal function does at least seem to slow down the advancment of NSF/NFD - and in certain cases may possibly result in an actual reversal of the condition - there is currently no consistent and successful treatment for NSF/NFD.
