Paxil® – a trade-name of Paroxetine - is classified as a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant. It was released in 1992 by the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline, and is used in the treatment of severe depression, obsessive-compulsive conditions, panic-attacks, and anxiety-based disorders. Paxil® was the very first antidepressant to receive formal approval in the United States for the specific treatment of panic-attacks. HOW DOES PAXIL® WORK? Paxil® works by allegedly balancing the levels of a natural substance in the brain called Serotonin, which helps to improve and regulate the mood of the patient. ARE THERE ANY POSSIBLE HEALTH RELATED RISKS? Yes, Paxil® poses some very serious health related risks. Side-effects associated with the use of Paxil® include: weight loss; weight gain; headache; nausea; increased sweating; insomnia; constipation; and diarrhea. The use of Paxil® has reportedly led to several very serious side-effects, too – in both patients and in their newborn children. On July 19, 2006, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) highlighted the results of two studies that detailed and described extremely adverse side-effects in patients prescribed Paxil®. First, the FDA highlighted the conclusions of a study that was published on February 1, 2006 in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). According to the FDA, the authors of the report addressed the experiences of a group of pregnant women who had previously suffered from major depression. During the period of their pregnancies, some of the women who were no longer feeling depressed stopped taking their antidepressant medicines. Others, meanwhile, elected to stay on their antidepressant medicines while pregnant. The study revealed that the women who stopped taking their medicine during pregnancy were five times more likely to have a relapse of deep depression than were the women who continued to take their antidepressant medicine while they were pregnant. The second study cited by the FDA – published on February 9, 2006 in the New England Journal of Medicine - focused its attention upon newborn babies suffering from Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN), which can be defined as a very serious and life-threatening lung condition that occurs soon after birth. Babies with PPHN have high-pressure in the blood vessels of their lungs; and, therefore, are unable to get sufficient oxygen into their bloodstream. Approximately 1 to 2 babies per 1000 babies born in the U.S. develop PPHN shortly after birth, and often require intensive medical care. In the New England Journal of Medicine study, PPHN was cited as being six times more common in babies whose mothers took an SSRI antidepressant after the 20th week of the pregnancy when specifically compared to babies whose mothers did not take any antidepressants.
