WHAT IS FOSAMAX?

Fosamax is contained in a class of medicines known as Bisphosphonates.

It is used to combat and/or prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis and steroid-induced osteoporosis.

It may also be utilized in the treatment of Page’s Disease – a chronic disorder of the bone that is caused by irregular breakdown and formation of bone tissue.

HOW DOES FOSAMAX WORK?

Fosamax works by slowing down the rate of bone loss while, at the same time, increasing bone mass, which may prevent future bone fractures.

ARE THERE ANY POSSIBLE HEALTH RELATED RISKS?

Fosamax has been connected to bone loss in the jaw – also referred to as Osteonecrosis of the jaw.

Specific symptoms of Osteonecrosis can include severe pain in the jaw, infections of the gums, swelling, numbness and lack of feeling, slow healing after gum surgery, and loose teeth.

On January 7 2008, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an alert highlighting the possibility of severe and sometimes incapacitating bone, joint, and/or muscle (musculoskeletal) pain in patients taking Bisphosphonates, such as Fosamax.

Although severe musculoskeletal pain is included in the prescribing information for all Bisphosphonates, explained the FDA, the links between Bisphosphonates and severe musculoskeletal pain may very well have been overlooked by healthcare professionals – thus delaying diagnosis, prolonging pain and/or impairment, and necessitating the use of analgesics.

The severe musculoskeletal pain in question, the FDA added, can occur within days, months, or years after starting a Bisphosphonate.

Some patients, said the FDA, have reported complete relief of symptoms after discontinuing the Bisphosphonate, whereas other, however, have reported slow or even incomplete resolution.

The risk factors for - and incidence of - serious musculoskeletal pain associated with Bisphosphonates are unknown, the FDA noted.

The FDA continued that the severe musculoskeletal pain in question is in contrast to the acute phase response characterized by fever, chills, bone pain, myalgias, and arthralgias that sometimes accompanies initial administration of intravenous Bisphosphonates, and may occur with initial exposure to once-weekly or once-monthly doses of oral Bisphosphonates.

The FDA informed healthcare professionals that they should consider whether Bisphosphonate use might be responsible for severe musculoskeletal pain in patients who present with these symptoms. And, if so, they should consider temporary, or even permanent, discontinuation of the drug.

WHAT ARE THE SPECIFIC HEALTH RELATED RISKS?

The most serious risks include:

  • Bone Fractures
  • Breakdown of the Jaw Bone
  • Severe Musculoskeletal Pain
  • Infection
  • Inflammation of the Bone Marrow

If you have experienced any of these side effects, or you have a loved one who has had a serious, adverse reaction to Fosamax, you may have a claim for legal compensation.
