WHAT ARE SPRINT FIDELIS LEADS?
Manufactured by Medtronic, Inc., Sprint Fidelis Leads are specific types of cardiac electrodes that connect an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) or cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator (CRT-D) directly to the patient’s heart. ICDs and CRT-Ds are devices that protect patients whenever heart rhythms occur that are perceived as being life-threatening.
HOW DO SPRINT FIDELIS LEADS WORK?
Surgically implanted, the defibrillators carefully monitor the rhythms of the patient’s heart. Whenever irregular or life-threatening heartbeats are detected and perceived, they deliver an electrical shock, which is specifically designed to restore normal heart rhythm, and prevent the heart from beating too fast.
ARE THERE ANY POSSIBLE HEALTH RELATED RISKS?
In late 2007, Medtronic, Inc. announced that it was voluntarily suspending worldwide distribution of the Sprint Fidelis family of defibrillation leads. This included four Sprint Fidelis Models: 6930, 6931, 6948, and 6949.
In addition, Medtronic advised physicians to cease implanting the leads and to return all unused products to the firm. The reason for the recall was because of the potential for lead fractures. The electronic wires in question were prone to fracture in a small number of patients. There was a possibility that this could cause the defibrillator to deliver an unnecessary shock – or, possibly, to not operate at all.
According to the Food and Drug Administration, some deaths and other serious injuries were reported in which a fracture in a Sprint Fidelis Lead may have been a possible or a likely contributing factor.
As of October 4, 2007, approximately 268,000 Sprint Fidelis Leads had been implanted worldwide, including 172,000 in the United States.
