WHAT IS GADOLINIUM?
Gadolinium is a “paramagnetic metal ion.” It is used in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to help provide a clearer image of bodily organs and tissues. It is also used in Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA), which is specifically designed to detect evidence of stroke, heart disorders, and vascular disease.
Gadolinium is FDA-approved for use with MRI as a contrast agent to provide a clearer picture of body organs and tissues. However, the use of a gadolinium-containing contrast agent to enhance MRA is not currently FDA approved.
ARE THERE ANY POSSIBLE HEALTH RELATED RISKS?
Information contained in a May 29, 2006 press release that was issued by the Danish Medicines Agency (DMA), as well as data referred to in a January 2006 report that appeared in the respected Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation journal, collectively detailed patients suffering from renal failure who subsequently developed a very rare - but potentially life-threatening - condition called Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis/Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NSF/NFD).
The DMA’s specific concern was that each and every one of the patients in question had undergone a gadolinium enhanced MRA procedure only a few weeks to a few months prior to developing NSF/NSD.
According to the FDA, the first case of NSF/NFD was seen in 1997, and appeared in patients suffering from advanced kidney failure. It causes fibrosis of the skin and the connective tissues – which means that the skin of the patient thickens, thus lessening or even preventing the bending and extending of joints, and resulting in a severe lack of mobility.
Equally seriously, NSF/NFD has reportedly spread to other areas of the body in some patients, including the diaphragm, and the vessels of the lungs.
This is a progressive condition that may be fatal.
Although improving renal function does appear to slow down the advance of NSF/NFD, and in some cases might possibly result in a reversal of the condition, there is no current, consistent and successful treatment for NSF/NFD.
