Avandia® Overview
An oral medication designed to treat patients with Type-2 diabetes, Avandia® was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1999. It works by helping to stabilize blood-sugar levels; and does so by making the body more sensitive and receptive to the effects of insulin.
In May 2007, the FDA released a statement advising that information obtained via clinical trials – and published in the New England Journal of Medicine - had revealed asignificant increase in the risk of heart attack in those patients to whom Avandia® had been prescribed. The trials demonstrated that Avandia® has the potential to increase the possibility of heart attack by 43%, and may increase fatalities from general heart disease by 64%.
A paper that appeared in the November 24, 2008 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine described the experiences of nearly 30,000 diabetic patients over the age of 65. Of those patients, 49.7 per cent had been prescribed Avandia® and 50.3 per cent had taken another drug: Actos®. One year later, 1,869 of the patients had died. Studies demonstrated that in those patients who had been prescribed Avandia®, the rate of death was 15-per-cent higher than in those prescribed Actos®.
Furthermore, studies have shown that the risk of bone fractures in patients taking Avandia® may be almost twice that of those not prescribed the drug. And in those who have been taking Avandia® for more than two years, the risk of bone fracture is nearly tripled.
