WHAT IS DIGITEK®?
Digitek® is a trade-name of Digoxin - also known as Digitalis - and is a purified cardiac glycoside (which means that it is a class of drug specifically used in the treatment of congestive heart failure and cardiac arrhythmia).
It is extracted from the foxglove plant, Digitalis lanata. Digoxin was commonly utilized in the treatment of a variety of serious heart conditions, including atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and, at times, heart failure that did not to respond to – or failed to be adequately controlled by – other forms of prescribed and FDA-approved medication.
ARE THERE ANY POSSIBLE HEALTH RELATED RISKS?
Yes, Digitek® poses some very serious health-related risks.
On April 25, 2008, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) stated that Actavis Totowa LLC, a United States-based manufacturing division of the international generic pharmaceutical company Actavis Group, was initiating a Class I nationwide recall of Digitek® (digoxin tablets, USP, all strengths) for oral use.
The products in question were distributed by Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc., under a "Bertek" label and by UDL Laboratories, Inc. under a "UDL" label.
The voluntary recall, said the FDA, was due to a serious possibility that Digitek® tablets containing double the appropriate thickness might have been commercially released to the public.
Significantly, and of most concern to the FDA, was the fact that these tablets could have contained twice the approved level of the active ingredient than was considered appropriate.
The FDA added that (a) the existence of double-strength tablets posed a risk of digitalis toxicity in patients suffering from renal-failure; (b) a number of reports of illnesses and injuries had been reported in people prescribed Digitek®; and (c) “Death can also result from excessive Digitalis intake.”
