Baycol®, which was initially approved in the United States in 1997, was a member of a class of drugs – known as statins - designed to lower cholesterol. HOW DOES BAYCOL® WORK? Baycol® worked by specifically blocking a particular enzyme in the body that is involved in the synthesis of cholesterol. ARE THERE ANY POSSIBLE HEALTH RELATED RISKS? There are a number of very serious, possible side effects that may result from Baycol®, including kidney failure, and death. In August 2001, the FDA announced that Bayer Pharmaceutical Division was voluntarily withdrawing the product as a result of reports of 31 U.S.-based fatalities in patients prescribed Baycol®. The deaths in question were reportedly due to a condition called fatal rhabdomyolysis, which occurs after a large number of skeletal muscles have died; or in the case of Baycol®, where the onset of the condition is a particular side-effect of a specific drug. Rhabdomyolysis has the effect of releasing a large amount of muscle protein into the bloodstream of the patient – which can then become trapped in the kidneys and potentially lead to fatal renal failure.
