URGENT HEALTH ALERT!!! Dilantin® Potentially Linked to Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) You may be entitled to compensation! Have you or a loved one taken Dilantin®, generic name Phenytoin?
The FDA posted an alert about Dilantin® (Phenytoin) in November of 2008: the drug is under investigation because of potential increased risk of serious skin reactions, including Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrosis (TEN).
Dilantin® and its Side Effects
Dilantin® is an anti-epileptic, anti-convulsant medication that acts to dampen the runaway brain activity that causes seizures.
The most serious side-effect is the Stevens Johnson allergic skin reaction (SJS).
Stanford Hospital and Clinics state that “A moderate number of people are allergic to Phenytoin, and one in ten thousand suffers the serious Stevens Johnson allergic skin reaction, which can be fatal.”
What is Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS)?
Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is rare disorder where the skin and mucous membranes react severely to a medication or infection. Recovery can take weeks to months, depending on the severity of the condition. The disorder usually requires hospitalization. If less than 10% of the body surface is affected, the reported mortality rate is around 5%.
Toxic Epidermal Necrosis (TEN) is considered to be a more virulent form of Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS). Cell death is caused throughout the epidermis. Reported mortality rate for Toxic Epidermal Necrosis (TEN) is thirty to forty percent.
Symptoms of Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS)
• Flu-like symptoms; upper respiratory infection and fever • Blistering of mucous membranes • Patchy areas of rash
In later stages of the disease
• Dermal layer fills with fluid • Skin sags from body; epidermis peels off in large sheets • Mouth becomes blistered and eroded • Eyes become swollen and ulcerated; blindness may occur • Death
