WHAT ARE PAIN-PUMPS?

Pain-Pumps are essentially comprised of plastic-tubes that are affixed to mechanical-pumps that are then inserted into the shoulders of patients who have undergone surgery for a condition called Shoulder Arthroscopy.

Shoulder Arthroscopy is a particular type of surgical procedure that involves the use of a tiny camera (an arthroscope) that, via a small incision, is inserted to assist in the examination and/or repair of the tissues of the patient’s shoulder joint.

The Pain-Pump works by pumping pain-medicine to the shoulder of the patient.

ARE THERE ANY POSSIBLE HEALTH RELATED RISKS?

Pain-Pumps have been specifically linked to a medical condition called Post-Arthroscopic Glenohumeral Chondrolysis (PAGCL).

PAGCL is a condition that can be far worse than the actual ailment(s) that the relevant surgery was intended to cure.

PAGCL can be defined as a progressive loss of cartilage of the Glenohumeral Joint: namely, the joint that joins the arm and the shoulder together.

The arm bone is connected to the joint and is covered with articular cartilage.

The cartilage allows the shoulder joint to move smoothly.

When this cartilage is damaged or destroyed, however, the arm cannot move as easily as it should.

Patients may experience a significantly reduced range of motion, as well as significant pain.

Contained within the American Journal of Sports Medicine - and also presented in July 2008 at a meeting of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine - were the results of a project that studied the extent to which cartilage damage had resulted from a variety of concentrations of the specific pain-medicines that are generally present in Pain-Pumps.

A total of 152 patients took part in the trial, of which 12 were found to be suffering from symptoms of PAGCL.

Significantly, all of those affected had been using Pain-Pumps that delivered two particular pain-medicines: Epinephrine and Bupivacaine.

Upon reviewing persuasive evidence that demonstrated serious destruction of - and damage to - the cartilage of certain patients, a recommendation was reached that the use of at least some medicines delivered by Pain-Pumps should be halted.

WHAT ARE THE SPECIFIC HEALTH RELATED RISKS?

The most serious risk is: Post-Arthroscopic Glenohumeral Chondrolysis (PAGCL)

If you have experienced this specific side-effect after using a Pain-Pump, or if you have a loved one who has suffered after using Pain-Pumps, you may have a claim for legal compensation.
