New Treatment Regimen for Mesothelioma

PDF E-mail

Researchers at the Mesothelioma Center at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center are focusing on a new approach to the treatment of pleural mesotheilioma, a rare and often fatal cancer of the lining of the lung.

The treatment involves the use of both chemotherapy and radiation therapy as opposed to the current treatment of the removal of part of the lung. The lead investigator, Dr. Robert Taub, notes that the current treatment of lung removal is risky and often yields unsatisfactory results. This new method hopes to avoid surgery if possible.

The new method involves the use of the chemotherapeutic agents, cisplatin and doxorubicin along with the isotope P-32. This strategy kills only the cancer cells that grow on the lung’s surface and lining while preserving the healthy surrounding tissue. A group of randomly selected participants will also receive intravenous chemotherapy using a different group of chemotherapeutic agents.

Mesothelioma is an aggressive and deadly form of cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a mineral fiber that at one time was used extensively in industry, shipbuilding and construction. The fibers can be easily inhaled and cause irritation to the lungs and other organs. This irritation leads to scarring and over time cancer develops. Unfortunately, it is often many years before the symptoms of Mesothelioma appear. By that time the cancer has reached an advanced stage, killing within only months or years of diagnosis. Cancer of the lung lining, or pleural Mesothelioma is the most common, affecting around 75% of all patients.
